Guardian Angel Lithograph On December 30, 1941, at maximum range, while on patrol looking for the expected Japanese invasion fleet of Hawaii, a lone PBY-5 from VP51, piloted by Ens. Frank M. (Fuzzy) Fisler and NAP 1/C Leonard H. (Snuffy) Wagoner, spotted two life rafts containing a B-17 crew commanded by Lt. Earl J. Cooper from the U.S. Army, 18th Bombardment Wing, Hickam Field. Facing 20 knot winds, 40 foot seas, low fuel and approaching darkness, the crew of the PBY landed and successfully rescued the Army aircrew. The pilots were awarded the Navy Cross December 31, 1941 by Admiral Chester W. Nimitz at Pearl Harbor. |
